Yea that is what i am considering chiili i was going to get a straight half breed, but some say these 2nd generation from proven workers are better, but genetics i am told makes it a far riskier bussiness!

I think i might be better off with a threeequarter greyxcollie

IF YOU ARE GOING FOR THE HALF CROSS YOU ARE LIMITED ,TO WHAT YOU WILL HUNT ,BUT LIKE IN NATURE YOU GET THE FREAKS ,TURNING UP ,WHAT WILL TAKE ALL GAME, BUT FOR A BETTER CHANCE A THREE QUARTER GREYHOUND XCOLLIE, WILL GIVE YOU BETTER OPTIONS ,AND BY THE WAY ,THERE IS NO DIFFERANCE IN INTELLIGENCE, I KNOW I WORKED BOTH.

Thanks for that learner but what is your opinion of the colliexgreycrossed with colliexgrey, again a chance thing or what!

YOU CAN NEVER SAY HOW THEY WILL TURN OUT,EVERY LITTER THROWS ONE WAY OR ENOTHER,IT DEPENDS ON THE PARENTS,WHAT YOU WANT FOR THE BETTER CHANCE IS FOR THE MOTHER ON THE BOTH SIDES TO HAVE BEEN A GREYHOUND,AS FAR AS I CAN WORK OUT THE PUPS USUALLY TAKE MOST OF THE MOTHERS GENETICS,I MAY BE WRONG.

YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITH A 3/4 GREY 1/4 COLLIE,I OWN A HALF CROSS AT THE MOMENT,HE WILL TAKE EVERYTHING EXCEPT DAYTIME HARES,BUT IF I WAS TO HAVE ANOTHER IT WOULD DEFINATELY BE A 3/4,THEY ARE ALOT FASTER,I ALSO FIND WITH MY HALF CROSS THAT HE SOMETIES TRIES TO BE TO CLEVER FOR HIS OWN GOOD.

A litter of first crosses can throw either way some more greyhoundy and some more towards the collie. With them been first cross back to first cross you have more of a chance of them been typey true to form, but a racey lighter first cross greyhound x collie if you are lucky enough to pick one out can be one hell of a dog for general lamping, ferreting ocassional hare if the circumstances are right and many make good foxing dogs. But some will tell you different.

Learner hit the nail on the head about three quarters vs first cross intellect this one is 27" and very fast as you can see he is built very well. He is a little bit moody but he isn't a window licker, he does however excell at his game on the bigger stuff and loves his ferreting but isn't the greatest dog in the smaller fields on the lamp but he has accounted for many daytime Hares.

Ive got collie x greyhounds from 10+ generations and they do the job just fine. :good: They are not as big or as racy as your average first cross, They are also not as flashy to look at, but if you get one from a good working line you should have no trouble :good:

The breeding goes back to Eddie Jones Celt, Terry Ahernes Rusty through mostly David James bred dogs. My old dog was bred by a chap from Scotland called James McKelvie who had a couple of handy dogs, one of his best known being a first cross he bred called Hemp who is the sire of my dog Casper. Hemp was an excellent hunter and James put him over a David James bred bitch out of Hemps sister. I then put Casper over the sister of a dog I owned years ago and that litter produced a few good workers including the bitch in the pictures above :good:

I also used Paul Douglas's NLRC field trial winner Maggie when she finished her working days and put Casper over her, the pups from that breeding were quite heavy, but a bitch from that litter went to a merle dog out of Casper and the pups threw quite nice and racy.

Would love to see pics of your dog, what lines is it from? :)

the bitch that i have is bred from merle ,romulus to tony thay's tammy then dave snelsons billy jim wrights jewel tip ratchers snap to tips bread, nixons drum back to ellis's fly then onto kev rowlands fern which is where i got my pup from.

she is a blue merle 22 1/2 inch high but she is very long, she is comming up to 5 years old & i am hoping to breed from her this season from a james dog out of drumxmouse all being well unless something else comes up that i can see that works well. as far as putting a picture up not that good on computer yet!

smallmouth has seen her & says that its worth keeping the line going.

in a matter of intrest seen as though you have a good working line i wonder if you know where i can find a good working stud dog from ? on the same lines.
